Throughout the years I’ve seen many words for ‘natural’ co-opted by everyone with a desire to express an image of environmental earth-awareness, sustainability, and non-synthetic whatever.
I’ve seen the word ‘holistic’ used to describe financial planning, home building, nursing assessments, surveying practices, law practices, and of course medicine.
How great to help us hold the natural world as our prime teacher and benefactor as we attempt to incorporate holism into our everyday lives! But are we really?
Greenwashing is everywhere. In the world of medicine (human and veterinary) I’ve seen the use of the words natural, alternative, holistic, complimentary, integrative and even fringe, woo-woo, unorthodox and unconventional to rebrand medicine by adding a few new tools to the menu. Often, however, it’s without really understanding the essence of holistic medicine. Practitioners end up using these new tools, such as acupuncture for example, in a very ‘allopathic’ fashion.
There can be a lot of confusion for pet parents when it comes to the practical application of natural medicines, and what the different medicines can provide.
I’m holding a live webinar offering you my take on ‘holistic’ medicine. I’ll share some definitions; but more importantly, I’ll be covering what you should look for when ‘going holistic’ to provide for your animal family.
Although this is not a Q&A, I’ll share a form to fill in your topic requests or to send in questions for the next Q&A.
We’re LIVE on Wednesday, November 8th
7pm Eastern, 6pm Central, 5pm Mountain, 4pm Pacific

The Heretical Vet
Yes!! Using acupuncture 'allopathically' really co-opts and undermines the value and purpose of classical Chinese medicine. Took my western brain a very long time to unwrap itself enough to begin to comprehend and embrace the foreign foundations of holistic medicine. So maybe most of us expect our holistic practitioners to practice medicine in ways familiar to us? And that's allopathically since that's all most of us know. Would have loved this webinar! Thank you, Dr. Dee, for bringing your invaluable take on holistic veterinary care to the world.
